Hudl Fan Platform Case Study

Purpose

This project aimed to improve the Hudl Fan platform’s search and filter system by creating a more personalized, user-friendly experience. The redesign focused on reducing irrelevant content and empowering users to find highlights, teams, and players efficiently, ultimately enhancing engagement on the platform.

Problem

The outcomes in the Hudl Senior Design Project reflect an identified problem statement surrounding the interface of the Hudl Fan platform. In this phase, the identified issues focused on the one-dimensional layout of the incorporated search engine within both the mobile and web platforms of the Hudl Fan platform.

The overflow of information and content originally didn’t enable users to locate information quickly or effectively and didn’t tailor to the user’s needs, motivations, goals, or behaviors. This resulted in an extensive amount of irrelevant content being surfaced, frustrating a diverse market of users who had different goals whether it was tracking teams, players, or highlights.

In the scope of the project, several issues and faulty concepts were identified, and an extensive process was conducted to ensure the significance existed as a relevant asset to be fixed.

Solutions

The redesigned system introduced multiple user-centered improvements:

  • Categorized content on the homepage and search results

  • Sort and filter tools to allow custom navigation

  • A personalized filter system enabling users to tailor their content feed to individual interests and goals

  • Clean, accessible design that integrated smoothly into Hudl’s existing interface

My Role

In the scope of the project, I assumed the role of the sole researcher and designer. I was responsible for several phases which included:

  • Developing a formal proposal which included a detailed problem identification phase, literature review in relation to the scope, methodology documentation, and an expected results plan. This process took much attention and detail to building the entire process out for myself and how I expected it to look in terms of execution.

  • Executing the tasks of the project itself, which involved user research and interviews, wireframes, and personas

  • Reconstructing the personalized search and filter system through low fidelity and high fidelity outcomes.

I collaborated with mentors to oversee the process of the project and provide professional feedback to ensure the highest quality of outcomes. Several criteria-based individuals contributed to the project through availability and feedback during user interviews and usability testing.

Outcomes

  • Users could now quickly surface relevant content, improving satisfaction and reducing frustration

  • The search experience became dynamic and personalized, making the platform feel more responsive and intuitive

  • From a business perspective, these improvements motivate an increase in user retention, engagement, and help Hudl stay competitive in the sports tech industry

Research & Insights

  • User interviews revealed core frustrations, like irrelevant content and lack of personalization

  • Market and competitor analysis highlighted a gap in smart filtering systems in sports tech platforms

  • Synthesized findings into user personas and strategic feature planning to guide design decisions

What I Learned

  • The outcomes and development of the Hudl Fan project that was drafted by me reinforced my understanding of users' motivations and behaviors in connection with sports technology. By innovating on the phases and processes that were executed, I was able to design a solution that directly addressed user pain points.

  • Additionally, I learned that learning and understanding the business perspective is important for ensuring that the outcomes are feasible and could realistically be implemented and integrated within the existing systems.

  • Lastly, the project enhanced my knowledge and skills behind user research and development within the sports industry. Gathering valuable information about the direction of the market and how to tailor sports technology to the target audience is important for innovation with user experience.
